It’s really been quite a while since I last updated here – Trini hasn’t neither been busy nor lazy, just lack of stuff. What exactly is it that she’s lack of? The cheesy way to say it would be 'passion'- yeah, right, I know, the P for life, or you know, whatever.

So much for my grousing… Anyway, I was DVD shopping last night (as usual), you know when you don’t have P for your life or anything, spending money then makes you feel super good!! And I spotted this: Music & Lyrics, with Hugh Grant & Drew Barrymore. Hmm, an interesting setup – I’ve adored Drew ever since Never been kissed, then Wedding Singer, then 50 First Dates and Fever Pitch… and her selection for movie soundtracks has always intrigued me; and with Hugh, he hasn’t really been in a crappy movie, not I’ve watched one anyway. I know I have to have it, and watch it right away, (I have tons of DVDs up in the shelf, getting dusty).

So I did, and honestly I had much more fun than I expected. I know what you would think - it’s a chicks’ movie, cheesy & blah blah blah… well yeah it is, but you guys can’t deny that you would probably have fun if you just watch it: Hugh portrayed Alex, a washed-up has-been from the 80s hit band PoP and later only performed occasionally for middle-age housewives in amusement parks or gradutaion reunion parties; Drew portrayed Sophie, a once promising student in writing, but was awfully hurt by her engaged professor in a dishonest relationship, where she was later on taken advantage by the selfish mean professor and used her as ‘raw material’ of a bad evil witch in his big selling book, which haunted Sophie ever since.

They met when Alex’s plant-girl (there is really this sort of job nowadays??) was away and Sophie came to take care of his plants. The story moved along when Alex was given a big break only if he could came up with a good song for the teenage megastar Cora – sort of the mixture of Britney & Shakira (a cool debut for Haley Bennett by the way) within 3 days, where he found Sophie’s knack on writing lyrics, and tried convincing her working on the song with him…

Hugh actually learned to play piano for the movie, both he & Drew learned singing too, and truth is that they did just a fine job; the mixture of occasional 80s pop music and Cora’s (quoted) “Buddhism & thong” type of pop music is just funny; Hugh not only brought the distinguishable accent but also the well-known dry, sarcastic British sense of humor to the movie, which made this rom-com even funnier; Drew’s clumsiness in the movie is just adorable, her clumsiness when meeting her ex (aka the mean professor) just made the film so believable and realistic - we all have our own hauntings.

I had a good laugh, yet with a warm musical feeling left in my heart afterwards - don’t miss it. And let me end this with a quoted comment from other review, I think he/she took the words right out of me:

“Music and Lyrics slides down like a very reasonable glass of rich chardonnay. Silly, formulaic, but rather well done.”
