Pride & prejudice
tortuous trinity 发表于 2006-03-10 14:27:53
Surprise, surprise! This marvelous edition produced by BBC in 1995, starring Colin Firth (as Mr. Darcy, coincidently he was also the 'proud' Mr. Darcy in Bridget Jones' Diary) & Jennifer Ehle (as Elizabeth Bennet) was on TVB Pearl last night, and will be on for the following Thursday nights I believe.
I must admit that I haven't been a big fan for Jane Austen, but when I first saw this on CCTV 8 in 1997, I just loved loved loved it so much that I watched whenever it was shown on CCTV (I believed I watched it at least 3 times in 1997!)
It is very difficult to beat this whole production. As you know the new Pride & prejudice was also on last year, starring Keira Knightley. I have to say that I am not impressed by her, even though I just saw a few clips on TV (I don't intent to watch the DVD), she couldn't convinced me as Elizabeth Bennet. Partly because Jennifer Ehle was so excellent in portraying Elizabeth and I've been so impressed by her since then, and partly because Keira is too young to capture the characters. Here's what I found that perfectly described Firth as Mr. Darcy :
"I fail to see how anyone could have portray Darcy better than did Colin Firth, who perfectly captured the character's aristocratic refinedness, his shyness and sense of decorum that come across as apparent stuffiness and disdain, and his underlying passion, all at the same time. He perfectly blends all these different traits and is utterly convincing in portraying the outward stiffness as a simple facade for the strong emotions and character underneath, rather than simply being stiff and wooden. His looks, and especially his eyes, say so much of the complexity of his character and his feelings with subtle expressions..."
Well, that's my first impression on the "English Gentlemen" :)
The cast, on the whole is outstanding!
Now, I have to applause the costume designers/makers, they really did an excellent job! So did the people that worked on the furniture! When adapting a well-known book as a movie/TV play, attention on small things is so important, everyone knows the story outline, not only will we, the audience, compare Mr. Darcy and Miss Bennet on screen to the ones on our minds, but also everything, clothes, living surroundings or the party occasions to the ones in our imagination.
Imdb rated it 9.4 out of 10. I personally highly recommend it as well. Here's the link to go behind the scenes: http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/prideandprej.shtml
Am rushing to get the DVDs on hand now!

yep i like the previous edition too... And dear Mr.Darcy is sooooo charming...And!!! I love the story too!!! coz i admit sometimes we do evaluate a person based on the first impression...after i saw the novel, i have been trying to avoid that. And finally, decent beauty -- Elizabeth!
